Seed dispersal by animals is an essential process for biodiversity. Many plants depend on birds, mammals, and other animals to spread their seeds. This process helps maintain species diversity, the regeneration of ecological communities, and the balance of ecosystems.
The DISPERSE Research Network on Frugivory and Seed Dispersal seeks to better understand the functioning and consequences of seed dispersal for biodiversity.
We conduct field research, gather existing information, analyze data, and use mathematical and statistical models to study the relationships between plants and animals that consume fruits. Through this, we aim to better understand the ecology and evolution of tropical ecosystems, contribute to biodiversity conservation, and support strategies for restoring natural environments.

Our goals
Collaboration network
To strengthen an inter-institutional research network, promoting collaboration between national and international centers.
Basic research: ecology and evolution
To advance knowledge about the ecological and evolutionary processes associated with frugivory and seed dispersal.
Conservation and Restoration
To study the effects of habitat fragmentation and loss on frugivory and seed dispersal, contributing to strategies for the conservation and restoration of biodiversity and ecosystem services.
Teaching
To contribute to the training of students and researchers through the integration of research, teaching, and scientific training.
Outreach
To promote the dissemination of scientific knowledge and dialogue with society about the importance of biodiversity and its ecosystem services.

The project team brings together researchers from 9 Brazilian and 2 foreign institutions, forming an inter-institutional network on frugivory and seed dispersal that connects laboratories in Brazil and abroad.
